Andhra Pradesh Minister for Roads and Buildings B.C. Janardhan Reddy announced an allocation of ₹600 crore for the development of roads that are beyond repair.
‘’This funding has been sanctioned following the directives of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, with the aim of improving road infrastructure across all constituencies in the State,’‘ the Minister informed in a statement on Friday.
‘’The Roads and Buildings Department will oversee the development of Major District Roads (MDRs) and State Highways (SHs) to enhance connectivity and ensure smoother transportation. The government has already undertaken significant efforts to make roads pothole-free, investing ₹861 crore to repair nearly 20,000 km of roads within a set timeframe.
‘’Special focus has been put on roads classified under Category-C, which are severely damaged and in need of urgent restoration. A sum of ₹600 crore has been allocated to reconstruct these roads. As part of the Major District Roads (MDR) initiative, work is currently under way on 86 projects across 64 constituencies, with ₹200 crore set aside to improve 536 km of roads,’‘ the Minister said.
For State Highways, the government had undertaken 139 projects across 99 constituencies, allocating ₹400 crore to upgrade 896.41 km of roads. In total, 225 road development projects covering 1,432.41 km were being executed with the ₹600 crore budget, he added.
‘’The State is working, under the Central government’s Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) Scheme, on making roads pothole-free in prioritised areas,’‘ Mr. Janardhan Reddy said, and emphasised that after five years of public hardship due to damaged roads, the government was committed to restoring road infrastructure. He promised that in the next five years, Andhra Pradesh’s roads would be returned to their former glory, providing safer and smoother travel for all citizens.
