A.P. High Court directs Eluru officials to submit report on minor ‘delivering’ baby in hostel toilet

The Andhra Pradesh High Court has directed the Eluru district officials to submit a report on the incident of a minor girl delivering a baby in the hostel toilet a few days ago.

In response to the news article published in The Hindu on December 9 with the title ‘Intermediate student delivers baby inside hostel toilet in Eluru’, the Juvenile Justice Committee (JJC) of the High Court on December 12 (Thursday) directed the Eluru District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) to submit a report.

The second-year intermediate student, who was living in a missionary organisation, reportedly delivered a baby in the hostel’s toilet in the wee hours of December 8.

The girl allegedly threw the baby into the compound of the neighbour’s house from the terrace of the hostel building. Locals who noticed the body of the infant alerted the police by calling ‘Dial 112’.

A team led by Eluru Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) D. Sravan Kumar, District Child Protection Officer (DCPO) Ch. Suryachakra Veni and Eluru Town Circle Inspector Y.V. Ramana visited the spot and shifted the body to the Government General Hospital (GGH) mortuary.

“The officials shall submit the report to the JJC of the A.P. High Court by December 16,” the JJC Chairperson said.

Responding to the orders, the Eluru DLSA Chairperson has asked the district Collector to submit a comprehensive report, which would be sent to the High Court.
