Leaders of the All India Students Federation (AISF) have opposed the decision of the Department of Social Welfare to close down the IIT Medical Academy in the Eedupugallu campus in Krishna district.
At a meeting held on Tuesday (March 18), the federation’s State vice-president M. Sai Kumar pointed out that the students of the campus along with their parents had been staging a protest against the decision to discontinue the campus. They said the abrupt closure of the campus had pushed the future of 600 first year students into uncertainty. They said the officials’ contention that the students would be shifted to another IIT training campus would not serve the purpose and demanded that they be allowed to continue in the same campus at least for this academic year.
They said the government should intervene and direct the officials concerned to continue Dr. B.R. Ambedkar IIT Medical Academy at Eedupugallu and warned of a protest, if their plea went unheeded.
The federation leaders S. Ranjith, Karthik, Jagadeesh, Shanmukh Priya, Abhi and others participated.
Scholarships for veterinary students
The federation leaders said it was unfortunate that the government had not met the demand of veterinary students, who had been protesting for last 44 days seeking an increase in the honorarium from ₹7,000 to ₹25,000.
“Their honorarium has been increased from ₹7,000 to only ₹10,500 and this is highly disappointing,” they said. Extending their full support to the veterinary students, they said the government should raise their honorarium on a par with that of that of MBBS, AYUSH and Ayurveda students.
