As the 33rd synod of bishops of the Syro-Malabar Church entered the fourth day on Thursday (January 9), the Church media commission sent out an appeal to the rebels to end their protest and reconcile with the Church authorities on the issue of unified Mass.
Accepting the reality that 34 dioceses of the Syro-Malabar Church have adopted the unified Mass, the group still protesting against the Mass should join the path of reconciliation for the good of the Church, said the commission in a social media posting.
The commission also said that the Church could not go back on the unified Mass and criticised the alleged misuse of funds to rally the faithful and foster animosity. Therefore, it was important to abandon the protests for the good of the Church, the appeal added.
Meanwhile, the police attempted to remove a group of rebel priests who had allegedly entered the archbishop’s house in the city on Thursday.
The rebels began a fast at the archbishop’s house demanding the dismissal of the newly constituted curia of the archdiocese. A statement from the group said 21 priests had joined the fast, vowing to stay until apostolic administrator Bosco Puthur ended his “cruelty.” The protest was organised by the Athiroopatha Samrakshana Samithi.
