Rains continued in the city on Friday, leading to widespread incidents of trees and branches falling. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) reported 68 cases of tree fall and 93 instances of branches collapsing across the city.
On Vanivilas Road, a tree fell on an electric wire, sparking panic among residents and causing traffic congestion. BBMP officials said Bescom quickly cut off the power supply to prevent accidents, while forest, police, and traffic officials reached the spot to clear the debris and manage traffic. The situation was brought under control after the tree was removed.
In the South Zone, two cars were damaged owing to falling trees, while another was damaged in the Dasarahalli Zone. No injuries were reported, according to BBMP’s control room.
BBMP Chief Commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao visited the civic body’s control room and the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) on Friday evening. He reviewed the situation and issued directions to all zonal commissioners and officials to take precautionary measures and respond swiftly to citizen complaints.
According to a BBMP press release, Mr. Rao instructed Forest Department officials to promptly clear fallen trees and broken branches brought down by strong winds. He also directed that stagnant water on roads be efficiently drained into side drains to prevent further disruptions.
BBMP has urged citizens facing any rain-related problems to call its helpline number 1533 for assistance.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported 6.1 mm of rainfall at its Bengaluru City station and 6.4 mm at the HAL station till 8.30 p.m. on Friday.
Traffic snarls were reported across several parts of Bengaluru, especially along Bannerghatta Road, M.G. Road, Hosur Road, Goraguntepalya, Mysuru Road, Tumakuru Road, Old Madras Road, and other key stretches in the city.
