The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) plans to set up 100 leaf composters to generate compost from fallen dry leaves. The work is under way at 100 parks in the city.
With summer approaching, fallen dry leaves have started accumulating across the city. To manage this efficiently, BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Giri Nath has asked officials to identify designated locations for leaf collection and removal. Measures will be taken in coordination with Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) to maintain cleanliness, Mr. Giri Nath said at a meeting at the head office.
As part of a green initiative, BBMP has commenced the work to set up 100 leaf compost units in selected parks of the 1,280 parks that fall under its ambit. These units will facilitate the on-site conversion of fallen leaves into compost, which can then be utilised for plant and tree maintenance within the parks. The project is expected to be completed soon.
Report on borewells in parks
Chairing a meeting with officials, Mr. Giri Nath emphasised the need to assess the operational status of borewells in all parks under the civic body’s jurisdiction. Officials have been instructed to identify functional and non-functional borewells and submit a detailed report at the earliest.
In parks where borewells are defunct, alternative water supply arrangements must be made immediately, he said.
Mr. Giri Nath also directed officials to coordinate with the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board to utilise treated water from sewage treatment plants and transport it via tankers for tree and sapling maintenance. With the onset of summer, he stressed the urgency of ensuring sufficient water supply for plants in parks, lakes, and medians, urging officials to compile a requirement list of water tankers.
