Early screening and detection can help people beat cancer, Speaker A.N. Shamseer has said.
The State was making a great beginning in the fight against cancer by screening everyone over 30 years and everyone should participate in the cancer screening campaign, he said, while inaugurating the special cancer screening camp held for women MLAs and women employees of the Assembly here on Thursday.
The cancer screening camp for women was held as part of the year-long “Arogyam, Anandam: Keep Cancers Away” campaign being held by the Health department.
Health Minister Veena George said that the participation in cancer screening camps by women MLAs will encourage more women to come forward willingly for cancer screening.
She said that late detection of cancer made the treatment more complicated, prolonged and expensive and it significantly affected the prognosis of the disease. Many people were reaching hospitals at very late stages, when treatment may not always help in remission. But regular cancer screening can help doctors pick up cancer early and even achieve cure.
The campaign was aimed at bringing in behaviour change in people, to make them prioritise their health before anything and thus subject themselves to regular screening.
Transport Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar, who was present, appreciated the initiative by the Health department and appealed to all to be part of the campaign.
K.K. Rema, MLA, was the first person to undergo screening. A total of 180 persons, including Ministers, R. Bindu and J. Chinchu rani, other MLAs and women staff of the Assembly participated in the screening camp. Of the 180 screened, 82 were referred for follow-up investigations.
The doctors from Regional Cancer Centre, Medical College and the Health Service participated in the camp.
