Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal wrote a letter to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday (December 19, 2024), saying that the people were expecting him to reflect on Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent comment on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

Mr. Shah’s statement in the Parliament that ‘chanting Ambedkar — Ambedkar has become a fashion these days’ stunned the nation. It was a matter of great importance concerning not only the Constitution but also the honour and legacy of Dr. Ambedkar.

Disrespect has crossed limits of tolerance, says Uddhav on Shah’s Ambedkar comment

The AAP chief said Mr. Shah’s comment was disrespectful to Dr. Ambedkar and it revealed the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) perspective towards him (Dr. Ambedkar) and the Constitution.

He said the people were feeling that those who revere Dr. Ambedkar can no longer support the BJP, he was not just a leader but the soul of the nation. “Dr. Ambedkar was honoured by the Columbia University with a Doctor of Laws and he authored the Constitution. Besides, he championed equal rights for the most marginalised sections of the society. How did the BJP have such audacity to comment on Dr. Ambedkar,” Mr. Kejriwal wondered.

Mr. Shah’s comment hurt the sentiments of millions of people and instead of apologising, Mr. Shah justified his remark and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has publicly supported the comment, adding insult to injury. “After the statement by the BJP, people expect you to deeply reflect on this issue as well,” Mr. Kejriwal added.
