Tension erupted after the protesting Congress activists and the police clashed following a protest march taken out under the aegis of the Congress Kochi South Block committee to Kochi MLA’s office demanding immediate intervention to resolve the worsening tidal flooding on Wednesday.

The march was stopped by the police leading to the clash in which the protestors accused the Kumbalanghi grama panchayat vice president P.A. Saheer was injured. The police also arrested the protesting activists following which they laid siege of the police station as well.

Though a long-standing problem, tidal flooding has been particularly worse this time around with many houses in the West Kochi area getting flooded during high tide. Local residents have been asking dredging of the backwaters and the rivers as a permanent solution to the problem.
