The direct Water Metro service between Eloor and the High Court was launched here on Monday (April 7).
The move follows the long-standing demand for a direct service from Eloor to the heart of the city. There will be four trips—two each in the morning and two in the evening—for commuters travelling between Eloor and the city.
Earlier, they had to take a boat from Eloor to South Chittoor before boarding another ferry from there to the city. The Kochi Water Metro currently operates 18 boats, and with the deployment of an additional boat for this new service, the total number has increased to 19.
At present, Water Metro services are available on the High Court–Fort Kochi route, as well as to Vypeen, Eloor, South Chittoor, Cheranellore, and along the Vyttila–Kakkanad Infopark route, which has gained much popularity as Kakkanad is at the heart of the IT industry hub in Kochi.
Kochi became the first city in the country to have such a facility following the launch of Water Metro services in 2021. The increasing number of services has helped grow the Water Metro’s popularity among both residents and visitors, while several other States have expressed interest in replicating the model.
