Diverse opinions on NOTA option in local body polls

HYDERABAD

The State Election Commission (SEC) held a meeting on Wednesday with representatives of all recognised political parties to discuss NOTA as a ‘fictional’ electoral candidate and other election-related issues.

Presided over by State Election Commissioner Rani Kumudini, the meeting was attended by representatives from Congress, BJP, AAP, AIMIM, BRS, TDP, All India Forward Bloc Party, CPI, and Janasena Party.

The SEC requested that parties submit their opinions on the proposal to include NOTA option in upcoming local body elections, suggesting a re-election if NOTA receives more votes than any candidate. This move aims to empower voters and prevent unanimous elections, which can be influenced by coercion or inducements.

The proposal has sparked differing opinions among political parties. The Congress party opposes re-elections, citing financial burdens, while the BRS supports the move, arguing it prevents coercion and misuse of power. The BJP has reserved its comment, stating the issue is under Supreme Court review. Some parties advocating for inclusion of NOTA option even in constituencies with a single candidate. The SEC said that it would take a decision on the proposal after receiving the suggestions, adding that it would consult the government if the process requires amendments to the concerned act or rules.

Other states such as Maharashtra, Delhi, and Haryana, have implemented similar rules, where re-elections are held if NOTA receives more votes. The State Election Commission will seek legal advice and send proposals to the state government for necessary amendments.

The SC has ruled in favour of conducting elections with the NOTA option, giving voters the freedom to express dissatisfaction with candidates.
