Tamil Nadu Law Minister S. Regupathy on Tuesday (December 31, 2024) said the DMK government would get justice for the Anna University student, who was sexually assaulted last week, in a speedy manner, just as it ensured punishment for Sathish, who was accused of murdering college student M. Sathya in October 2022.
“The Dravidian model government completed the inquiry and succeeded in getting capital punishment for Sathish within two years. The police and judiciary will get justice for the Anna university student,” he said in a statement.
He said former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami was running a ‘Goebbels campaign’ as he was not able to digest the fact that women were coming forward to file complaints over crimes perpetrated against them. “His statements and acts have caused anguish to women. He has an agenda to keeping reminding people about the incident by making it a news story, which only shows his sadistic mindset,” Mr. Regupathy said.
The Minister said people know the transparent manner with which the State government had acted on the issue and Mr. Palaniswami was only spreading canards. “Our Ministers responded to all the allegations of Mr. Palaniswami because our government is honest and functions in a transparent manner,” he said.
Responding to Palaniswami’s question as to why the government failed to monitor a history sheeter like Gnansekaran, who has been accused of sexually assaulting the student, Mr. Regupathy said he was involved in criminal activities between 2014 and 2019 when the State was ruled by the AIADMK, led by Mr. Palaniswami. “What were the steps taken to get punishment for Gnanasekaran? It [the AIADMK government] had filed only a theft case against a sex criminal. Had it taken action, the present incident would not have taken place,” he charged.
Mr. Regupathy also accused Mr. Palaniswami of enacting a political drama with the BJP to create fear among students.
