Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Saturday alleged that former Chief Minister and Opposition leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami failed to be in the Assembly because he knew of the government’s plan to move a resolution against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024.
“He flew to Delhi and met Home Minister Amit Shah who is going to pass the Bill seeking to amend the Waqf Act,” he said while participating in the Iftar feast at his Kolathur constituency.
Mr Stalin said Muslim organisations, not just in the country, but across the world, had appreciated the resolution, but the Leader of the Opposition failed to participate in the debate on the resolution.
Mr Stalin said while Mr. Palaniswami was in Delhi, his partymen were wringing their hands in despair because they were aware that the Muslims had totally rejected their party.
“They were concerned because they had already distanced themselves from that party (BJP). In the Assembly, they were looking at one another and were not able to make any decision. They went outside and spoke to someone on the phone before supporting the resolution moved by me. I thanked them for their decision,” he said.
Recalling Mr Palaniswami’s assertion that he had spoken in favour of the two-language formula during his meeting with Mr Amit Shah, the Chief Minister said he thanked Mr Palaniswami for it.
