Electric vehicle clusters to be set up in Dharwad, two other towns

The State government will set up industrial clusters centred around electric vehicles (EV) in Dharwad, Gauribidanur and Harohalli. A total of one lakh jobs are likely to be created in these centres together.

This was part of an eco-friendly transport policy released at the Global Investors Meet in Bengaluru. The policy aims to attract at least ₹50,000 crore in the electric and hydrogen vehicle manufacturing sector in the next five years.

“The State stands third in the EV sector in the country and we have 2.50 lakh electric vehicles. The new policy has already allocated ₹25,000 crore for battery packs, cell manufacturing, component manufacturing, OEM, charging, testing infrastructure and research and development. The new policy emphasizes on developing charging infrastructure and a network of hydrogen stations. Retrofitting of two-wheelers, three-wheelers and four-wheelers that are currently running will be encouraged,” said a release from Minister for Large and Medium Industries M.B. Patil.

“EV bus services will be increased for short-distance services outside the BMTC area in Bengaluru. In addition, e-commerce and delivery companies have been urged to convert their two-wheelers and three-wheelers to EV/hydrogen by 2030. Municipalities, municipalities and town panchayats will also be required to convert their solid waste management vehicles. This will also apply to private companies and school vehicles,” he said.
