A fire broke out in a multi-storey building at Mechua in central Kolkata on Tuesday (April 29, 2025). Ten fire engines rushed to the spot to control the fire which broke near Falpatti, a wholesale market of fruits.
One person died after jumping from the building to escape the fire. The multi-storey building where the fire broke out is a hotel on Madan Mohan Barman Street. There were residents inside the hotel when the fire broke out and panic spread among the people inside the building.
The police and fire brigade kept repeatedly telling people not to jump from the building in panic. But in the meantime, Manoj Paswan jumped from the top to save himself from the fire. He was taken to the Medical College Hospital and was declared dead.
Several people rushed to the balcony of the hotel and tried to descend from the building in panic. Two people were brought down by fire ladders. More people could be trapped inside the building as fire fighting efforts were still on.
The injured were taken to Medical College Hospital. Mayor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation Firhad Hakim visited the spot and took stock of the fire fighting measures.
The fire occurred in a congested area where many shops are located, which came as a challenge as fire fighting measures.
State BJP president Sukanta Majumdar expressed condolence over the death in the fire and urged the State administration to immediately rescue those affected, ensure their safety, and provide them with necessary medical and humanitarian assistance.
