Five men arrested, ‘paraded’ for cow slaughter in M.P.’s Damoh; ‘illegal’ properties razed

“Five men were arrested in connection with the alleged slaughter of a pregnant cow and their “illegal” properties were razed down on Saturday (March 9, 2025) in Madhya Pradesh’s Damoh,” police said. The accused were also “paraded” while being taken to a court.

Earlier on Monday (March 3, 2025), two men accused of cow slaughter were also “paraded and thrashed” in public by the police in Ujjain.

According to the police, members of right-wing organisations on Friday (March 7, 2025) morning went to Sita Baoli after they got information regarding cow slaughter, and were allegedly fired upon when they confronted the persons.

Damoh Superintendent of Police Shrutkirti Somvanshi told The Hindu that the five men, including prime accused Kallu Kasai, were arrested on Saturday(March 9, 2025) on charges of cow slaughter and that a separate FIR was also filed for alleged attempt to murder based on a complaint from Hindu Jagran Manch, Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal.

Mr. Somvanshi said the accused had “encroached” upon a property of the local municipality and that the administration demolished the “enclosures where they used to illegally slaughter cows”.

He said that the prime accused has 16 cases registered against him, including cow slaughter and attempt to murder. “The other accused are also his family members. We are investigating if more people are involved in this,” he said.

The SP also said the police are working to invoke provisions of the National Security Act (NSA) against Kallu Kasai.

When asked about the parading, he said the police vehicle taking them to the court had broken down. “So, they had to be taken to the court on foot. Some local media called it parading,” he said.

The right-wing outfits also took out demonstrations protesting against the alleged incidents.

The pregnant cow was taken to a veterinary hospital but could not survive and the attempts to save the calf also failed, a local administration official said.
