A tragic road accident resulted in the fatalities of four persons and left 22 others injured near Gangesagaram village at the outskirts of Chittoor city, in Andhra Pradesh, during the early hours of Friday (January 17, 2025.)
The incident took place around 3 a.m., when a private travel bus enroute Trichy, from Tirupati, lost control and overturned while attempting to evade a parked tipper truck on the Chittoor-Tachuru highway.
The tipper was stationary on the highway as part of ongoing construction work on the Chittoor-Tachuru road. Preliminary reports said the bus, traveling at a high speed, swerved to avoid the stationary vehicle, collided with the road divider, and subsequently overturned, coming to a halt across the roadway. The impact led to a significant damage to the bus and resulted in several passengers being trapped inside.
The police from Chittoor city and medical teams arrived at the scene to rescue the injured. District Collector Sumit Kumar rushed to the spot to oversee the rescue and relief efforts.
Four passengers were confirmed dead at the spot. Among the 22 injured individuals, several sustained severe injuries and were initially transported to the Chittoor District Hospital for medical attention. Those in critical condition were later shifted to the Christian Medical College (CMC) in Vellore in trauma care.
The police are yet to disclose the identities of the victims and efforts are being made to notify the families of those affected.
Collector Sumit Kumar assured the families of the victims and injured that all necessary actions would be taken to assist them. “Our immediate priority is to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured and to support the families of the deceased. Additionally, we will investigate the circumstances surrounding this accident to ensure accountability,” he said.
The police initiated an investigation into the matter and said the bus was traveling at a very high speed, which may have led to the driver’s failure to control the vehicle.
