Four Tamil Nadu fishermen sustained injuries after they were allegedly attacked mid-sea by unidentified persons, suspected to be Sri Lankan fishermen, late on Wednesday (April 16, 2025) night.
The injured fishermen, upon reaching the shore at Kodiyakarai on Thursday (April 17) morning, received first aid at a Primary Health Centre in Kodiyakarai and were subsequently admitted as in-patients to the Government Hospital in Vedaranyam.
The assailants stole a GPS device, a walkie-talkie set, a few cell phones, a charge light, fishing gear, and fish worth around ₹20,000 from the four fishermen.
Coastal Security Group sources have identified the injured fishermen as S. Ramakrishnan, 63, of Sirkazhi in Mayiladuthurai district, G. Senthil, 46, and P. Jagan, 36, of Pudupettai in Mayiladuthurai district, and D. Samuel of Chennai.
Sources said the four fishermen had set sail on a fibre boat from Kodiyakarai in Nagapattinam district on April 14. They were fishing about 13 nautical miles southeast of Kodiyakarai when a group of three unidentified persons in a boat intercepted them on Wednesday night.
Two of them spoke Tamil and were armed with knives and logs; they allegedly attacked Senthil, Ramakrishnan, Jagan, and Samuvel, causing injuries to them, sources said. They fled the scene after stealing the fishermen’s belongings.
The Vedaranyam Marine Police are investigating the incident.
