Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi on Friday (February 28, 205) criticised the two-language policy followed by the State government, terming it “rigid.”

Students in Tamil Nadu felt they were “hugely deprived” of opportunities compared to those in the neighbouring States due to the State’s rigid two-language policy, the Raj Bhavan said in a social media post.

Referring to the Governor’s recent interaction with numerous leaders, entrepreneurs, and students from across south Tamil Nadu, the Raj Bhavan said: “They feel that unfortunately, in the name of opposition to Hindi, they are not allowed to study even other South Indian languages. This is indeed unfair. Our youth must have the choice to study languages.”

“There is huge demand for the implementation of the NEP [National Education Policy] 2020.” Though this region was rich in human and natural resources, it felt like a “neglected backyard,” the statement said. Despite huge potential for industrialisation, people there felt deprived of opportunities, and there were serious problems of substance and drug abuse among the youth, it added.
