The State government has decided to enact a legislation providing for 42 per cent reservation to backward classes communities in education, employment and political spheres.
A Bill to this effect will be introduced in the State Legislature during its upcoming budget session to give statutory backing to the government’s decision. The government has decided to give another opportunity for those who could not take part in the recent Socio, Economic, Employment, Educational, Political and Caste survey. Accordingly, those who missed out can register their details with the officials concerned between February 16 and 28, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka said.
Those who could not attend the survey can approach the respective mandal parishad development officer to register their family details or fill the forms that would be made available online. In addition, the government had also put in place a toll-free number to which the interested can make a call and register their details. “We appeal to all those who deliberately avoided the survey or missed it because of other reasons to avail the opportunity and join the mainstream,” Mr. Bhatti Vikramarka said.
The Deputy Chief Minister, along with other Ministers, attended a meeting convened by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to review the situation arising out of the government’s decision to enhance reservation for the backward classes communities on Wednesday. The meeting decided to take steps to pass a unanimous resolution in the legislature that would be forwarded to the Central government for its consent.
According to Mr. Bhatti Vikramarka, it was decided to mount pressure on the Centre to give its consent to the Bill envisaging higher reservations to BCs proportionate to their population by raising the issue in the budget session. Simultaneously, a high-level delegation of the State government would visit the national capital to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers concerned and leaders of major political parties in the Parliament to mobilise their support to the initiative taken by the Telangana government.
The Congress MPs would be asked to raise the issue during the Parliament proceedings so as to mount pressure on the Centre to give its consent to the proposed Act. The Deputy Chief Minister requested the political parties in the State to extend their cooperation to the proposed legislation so that the long cherished dream of BC and OBC communities for reservation in proportion to their population was realised.
“We request the political parties to set aside political differences in the interests of the OBC communities if they are indeed committed to the latter’s cause,” he said. The government, he asserted, was prepared to take the additional burden that could be incurred on account of extending benefits of enhanced reservations to backward classes as it was committed to their cause.
