Central Tax and Customs Commissioner Sadhu Narasimha Reddy highlighted the historical and administrative importance of the Central Excise Act, which came into effect 80 years ago. He mentioned that the Central Excise and Salt Act was approved on February 24, 1944, and started to be implemented on the same day.
The Central Excise Act, which is a combination of 11 laws, was renamed the ‘Central Excise Act, 1944’ in 1966. The department has since played a key role in regulating the production and consumption of goods in the country, he said.
Participating as the chief guest at an event organised here on the occasion of Central Excise Day on Monday, Mr. Narasimha Reddy said the program was intended to create awareness about paying taxes and adhering to laws. “The Central Excise Day reminds us of the economic milestones achieved by India and the role of excise duties in the country’s economic development”, he observed.
Mr. Narasimha Reddy said the Central government had established the first Central Excise Commissionerate in Guntur in 1971 as the region had significant tobacco cultivation, and revealed that as of January 2025, the Guntur Central GST Commissionerate achieved ₹110.49 crore revenue against the targeted ₹100 crore. There was a 30% increase in excise duty collections.
Later, Mr. Narasimha Reddy felicitated P. Venkatachalam and P. Venkateswarlu who won silver medals at the 54th All India Central Revenue Sports Competitions held in Bangalore from February 21 to 23.
