The Nallapadu Lake in Guntur spanning over 93 acres is all set for a major revitalisation as part of a comprehensive development initiative.
Union Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar announced the project after inspecting the lake.
Prathipadu MLA Burla Ramanjaneyulu, Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) Commissioner Puli Srinivasulu, and officials from the irrigation, revenue, and municipal administration departments accompanied Mr. Chandra Sekhar.
During the inspection, Dr. Chandra Sekhar noted that the lake had not been desilted for the past 30 to 40 years, leading to accumulation of silt.
He emphasised that the government would allocate ₹10 crore to ₹12 crore through a contract-based desilting initiative, generating funds to improve the lake’s surroundings.
The proposed developments include a walking track, playground, and increased water storage capacity, aiming to address local drainage issues and encroachments.
Prathipadu MLA Ramanjaneyulu highlighted that extensive infrastructure work had been created in the merged villages of the GMC, including roads, drainage systems, and drinking water supply.
He assured that the next phase of development would focus on lakes. He acknowledged that about 4.5 acres of land within the lake area were being cultivated by Dalit farmers and assured that their livelihoods would be protected through a prior survey before any action was taken.
GMC Commissioner Puli Srinivasulu confirmed that a comprehensive survey of the lake would be conducted, stressing that its development would enhance groundwater levels in the surrounding areas. He asked the town planning officials to review and submit a report on encroachments.
