The Tamil Nadu State Coastal Zone Management Authority (TNSCZMA) has directed the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) to conduct a comprehensive heritage impact assessment and a visitor carrying capacity study before proceeding with the renovation of the Shore Temple in Mamallapuram.
The proposed ‘immersive experience’ project by TTDC, which aims at enhancing the visitor experience at the UNESCO World Heritage site, was reviewed at a recent TNSCZMA meeting.
The project, estimated at a cost of ₹24.72 crore, includes an arrival plaza, enhanced parking, interpretation centre, souvenir and food kiosks, pedestrian pathways.
It also involves the rejuvenation of Vishnu Tank and a link road on the landward side of Mamallapuram beach with multiple amenities at Mamallapuram village.
In the light of several regulations, the TNSCZMA said the Shore Temple’s visual and cultural integrity must be preserved throughout the renovation process.
It noted that the site falls within the jurisdiction of the Archaeological Survey of India, and the TTDC must obtain the necessary approvals from the National Monuments Authority before beginning any renovation work.
The Authority stressed that no construction activities should begin without these approvals in place.
In addition to the heritage impact assessment and capacity study, the TNSCZMA outlined a series of conditions for the project to ensure minimal environmental impact and sustainable tourism. These include maintaining the Shore Temple as a plastic-free zone, enforcing measures to protect the coastline, and ensuring that construction materials are eco-friendly.
The TNSCZMA also urged the TTDC to adopt renewable energy sources, water-efficient systems, and green initiatives like salinity-tolerant plants to enhance the site’s environmental sustainability.
