Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president K. Sudhakaran has criticised the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) government in Kerala, alleging its inaction in tackling the drug menace in the State and accusing it of facilitating the spread of narcotics.
Speaking to the media in Kannur on the sidelines of an event organised by the Mahila Congress Kannur district committee against drugs and violence on Friday, he criticised the station bail granted to those arrested in the ganja bust at the Kalamassery polytechnic hostel.
“Those who carry liquor and ganja cannot be called students. Strict action is necessary. But the government has failed to curb drug abuse,” he said.
Mr. Sudhkaran alleged that in cases involving Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] members, the accused were “routinely granted bail”, while police officers investigating such cases were either suspended or transferred.
He further accused the government of being complicit in the drug trade, claiming that ”Kerala has become a land of alcohol and drugs.”
‘SFI aiding drug trade’
“The SFI is aiding the drug trade and inspections must be intensified across the State,” he said.
Referring to the seizure of cannabis at the Kalamassery polytechnic hostel, Mr. Sudhakaran said this is a serious issue. “The State is being ruled by the Left and its leaders and activists are making a living by selling drugs,” he said.
The Congress leader also called on the people of Kerala to unite against the drug menace and vowed that the KPCC would continue its fight.
“Let the people decide whether they want a peaceful and harmonious society,” he said.
