Former Minister and senior Congress leader Kagodu Thimmappa will receive two honorary doctorates from two universities in Shivamogga district on January 22.
Kuvempu University at Shankarghatta in Bhadravathi taluk and the Keladi Shivappa Nayaka University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences at Iruvakki in Sagar taluk will confer the honorary doctorates on Kagodu Thimmappa, 92.
The convocations of both universities will be held on Wednesday, January 22. Karnataka Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot will be taking part in the programmes. Senior officers of both universities recently conveyed the university’s decision to Mr. Thimmappa and invited him to attend the convocation to receive the honour.
Mr. Thimmappa, an advocate by profession, joined active politics at a young age. He fought for the rights of tenant farmers. He was elected to the State Assembly for the first time in 1972 as a candidate of the Socialist Party. Later, he joined the Congress party. He played a major role in the effective implementation of the land reforms in the State.
He was elected to the Assembly five times from the Sagar constituency. He worked as the Minister for Public Works, Health, and Revenue Departments. He also served as Speaker of the Assembly.
