Stringent enforcement of road safety rules and intensive drive by the police against terrorising road rage by the youth has significantly reduced fatal accidents in Kanniyakumari district.
According to Superintendent of Police R. Stalin, the district that witnessed 106 deaths in road accidents between January and March 2024 has lost only 49 lives during the corresponding period this year. This is mainly due to strict policing across the district with the police taking stringent action against erring road-users whenever they violate road safety rules.
While the drivers of heavy vehicles violating traffic rules, especially the truck drivers transporting minerals, stones, and the boulders, were taken to task, breathalysers were deployed to book the boozers manoeuvring vehicles including bikes, cars, vans, and heavy vehicles. Cases were registered against the two-wheeler riders without helmets and the parents of under-aged children riding two-wheelers or driving cars were booked besides slapping hefty fine on them.
The road rages, races, wheeling and so on were viewed seriously and cases were registered against those who rashly drove the vehicles, particularly bikes.
While curbing the road safety rule violations through strict enforcement of law, the police took steps for improving road safety by installing signboards, especially in the accident-prone areas, fixing reflecting stickers or lights on medians and keeping barricades to curb rash driving along main thoroughfares.
Besides organising road safety awareness programmes in schools and colleges, awareness pamphlets are being distributed among the public, Mr. Stalin added.
