The government of Karnataka will take up construction of a flyover in Belagavi if the Union Government does not support the project, Public Works Department Minister Satish Jarkiholi said in Belagavi on January 26.

The flyover has been designed to connect the two national highways between Karnataka and Maharashtra and Karnataka and Goa. The Minister told reporters that the project was getting delayed due to opposition from some local BJP leaders.

“We met Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari with the proposal and asked him to release funds. He agreed and announced it too. But the project has not taken off as some local leaders are opposing it. Repeated requests from the government of Karnataka to the Union Government have failed to evoke any response. How many times can we go on asking them? If they do not support it, we will take it up on our own,” he said.

According to the Minister, the project needs ₹300 crore. The State Government would start by investing over ₹100 crore in the first phase. “We will not abandon the project,” he said.
