The Election Commission has announced that the byelection in Nilambur Assembly constituency will take place on June 19. The results will be declared on June 23. The notification will come on Monday (May 26, 2025).
June 2 will be the last date to submit nomination. The last date to withdraw the nomination will be June 5.
The State Election Commission was set to hold the election any time. As many as 263 polling booths, including 59 new ones, were set by limiting the number of voters in each polling station at 1,200.
Nilambur Assembly constituency comprises Nilambur municipality and the panchayats of Vazhikkadavu, Moothedam, Edakkara, Pothukal, Chungathara, Karulai and Amarambalam.
In the last Assembly election held in 2021, Left Democratic Front (LDF)’s independent candidate P.V. Anvar was elected with a majority of 2,700 votes against United Democratic Front (UDF)’s V.V. Prakash.
Mr. Anvar fell off with the LDF and quit his Assembly membership on January 13, 2025, necessitating the byelection in Nilambur.
Mr. Anvar, in spite of his political wanderings and desperate attempts to get into the UDF, has been opposing the LDF, particularly the CPI(M) in Nilambur. At present he is the State convener of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC).
Congress State general secretary Aryadan Shoukath’s name is the most prominent among the UDF’s potential candidates being discussed in Nilambur. District Congress Committee president V.S. Joy too has been lobbying for candidacy in the byelection.
The LDF is likely to field an independent candidate to replicate the victories it achieved against the UDF in 2016 and 2021 in Nilambur.
