‘Mobilise Her,’ a project implemented by the Kochi Corporation with assistance from the European Union (EU) to study and address the mobility issues faced by women, was launched by Mayor M. Anilkumar on Monday (January 20).
The project aims to ensure smooth, round-the-clock transport arrangements primarily for women, along with the development of infrastructure for a women-centric transport system. It will be implemented with financial assistance from the EU under the Urban Electric Mobility Initiative, with support from the Kochi Corporation’s Centre for Heritage, Environment and Development (C-Hed), the Centre for Public Policy Research, and the Delhi-based Participatory Research in Asia.
Around 18 community social organisations have been identified to collaborate on the project, which will be implemented across the city. In his inaugural address, Mr. Anilkumar emphasised the importance of collective efforts to improve the public transport system and mentioned ongoing efforts to make the city more pedestrian-friendly. “Integrating the Mobilise Her project with the corporation’s Local Area Plan initiative will help revolutionise the transportation sector,” he said.
EU representative Delphine Brissonneau pledged full support to the project, which will be an asset in the area of sustainable transportation.
Representatives from selected community-based organisations, including Kochi Metro Rail Limited, Kochi Metropolitan Transport Authority, Greater Cochin Development Authority, Goshree Islands Development Authority, and the World Resources Institute, participated in the discussion held after the inaugural ceremony.
