Land purchase committees to be formed at local-body level to expedite houses for extremely poor families

Land purchase facilitation committees will be formed at local-body level to identify sufficient land for families identified as extremely poor under the State government’s ongoing programme to eradicate extreme poverty.

A Statewide survey across all wards had identified 64,006 families as extremely poor. From this, micro-plans have been prepared for 56,697 families, out of whom 5,776 families were found to be landless and homeless.

Until December 2024, the government was able to provide land and houses for only 412 of the families, as per a report submitted by the Local Self-Government department Principal Secretary. The land purchase facilitation committees are being formed in this context to identify larger vacant plots of public land for constructing houses for beneficiaries in each area.

The committee

The land purchase committee will be headed by the chairperson of the respective local body, with the welfare standing committee head as the vice-chairperson and the local body secretary as the nodal officer. The committee will also have the chairperson of the Community Development Society (CDS), the assistant secretary and village extension officer as members.

As part of the extreme poverty eradication programme, local bodies prepared micro plans for each of the families to identify their immediate as well as long-time needs.
