To strengthen Intermediate education, and improve attendance and results, the Government of Andhra Pradesh has decided to implement the ‘Dokka Seethamma Mid-Day Meal’ scheme for 1,48,419 students studying in 475 government junior colleges in the State.

Minister for Human Resources Development (HRD) N. Lokesh will launch the scheme at the government junior college at Payakapuram in Vijayawada on January 4, 2025 (Saturday).

Out of the 475 colleges, 77 are connected to centralised kitchens, while the remaining 398 will rely on kitchens of the schools nearby for preparation of food.

Inclusion of the Intermediate students in the scheme will cost the State exchequer ₹27.39 crore this year and ₹85.84 crore in the next academic year.

Free textbooks

In the current academic year, more than two lakh Intermediate students in the government junior colleges, A.P. Model Schools, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) and High School Plus institutions have received free textbooks, notebooks and school bags.

The Education Department has also established Academic Guidance and Monitoring Cells (AGMCs) at the district and regional levels to improve teaching standards. The government has also initiated a pilot project, in collaboration with IIT-Madras, in 25 junior colleges in Chittoor and four junior colleges in Guntur districts to enhance students’ skills in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and English.

For the first time in 12 years, the syllabus is being revised to foster creativity among the students from the next academic year. The idea is to reduce content for the second-year Intermediate courses and design the syllabus in sync with the syllabus of competitive examinations such as NEET and EAMCET.

Student kits

From the next academic year, Intermediate students will also receive ‘student kits’ with EAMCET / NEET preparation material and practical records.

Plans are also in the offing to integrate 353 High School Plus institutions into the Intermediate education system from the next academic year.
