The Mysuru Railway Division of South Western Railway launched a fortnight-long green drive on Thursday with focus on reducing the menace of plastic pollution.

The two-week long drive will culminate on June 5, marking World Environment Day, the theme for which is “Combating Plastic Pollution”, which is also the focus of the green drive.

The railway authorities said the initiative aims to spread awareness and encourage active participation from railway staff, passengers, and the general public in reducing plastic use and embracing sustainable practices.

Activities are being conducted across major stations including Mysuru, Davangere, Shivamogga Town, and Arsikere, according to the authorities who said that the key highlights include awareness campaigns, cleanliness drives, workshops, installation of plastic bottle crushing machines, street plays (Nukkad Nataks), school outreach programmes, and promotion of eco-friendly alternatives.

The celebrations will conclude at Vontikoppal Railway Colony, Mysuru, with a valedictory ceremony, which will be attended by Divisional Railway Manager Mudit Mittal.

The event will feature the distribution of plants to railway families and achievements from the drive will be showcased, and outstanding contributions by individuals and stations will be honoured, the authorities said.
