Nursing graduates undergoing compulsory internship at the Government Medical College Hospital, Ernakulam, said on Wednesday that they would end their ongoing strike, if the authorities accepted the demand for resolving discrepancies in the assignment of night duties.
Over 55 graduates are protesting under the banner of Kerala Compulsory Nursing Servicers Association alleging that they had to undertake night duty for three days after doing nine days of day shift, while the regular staff had to do night duty for three days only after 12 days.
In a letter to the Medical Superintendent on December 26, 2024, the association said the injustice meted out to interns could not be accepted as they had to undertake additional duty following staff crunch at the hospital. The protesters said the authorities had asked them to submit their request on Thursday morning. A decision on whether to call off the strike would be taken only after the decision to be taken by the hospital authorities, they said.
A senior official at the medical college hospital dismissed the allegations that those on internship were assigned additional duty as their average duty time daily was only 6.5 hours.
