A passenger assaulted a co-traveller aboard an IndiGo flight from Mumbai to Kolkata on Friday (August 1, 2025) following which he was handed over to law enforcement agencies for unruly conduct at the destination airport.

A video went viral on social media of a passenger slapping another co-passenger as the aircraft was taxiing out at Mumbai airport. A bystander can be heard objecting to the assault.

The commotion happened as the passenger reported discomfort possibly due to a panic attack and requested to be deboarded leading to protests from others as it would cause a delay. The aircraft had already started taxiing at this point and took off for its destination.

“The individual involved was identified as unruly and handed over to the security authorities upon arrival,” IndiGo said in a statement.

Reported to DGCA

The matter was also reported to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

Passengers can face up to two years of ban from flying for unruly conduct onboard an aircraft following an enquiry. As per the rules laid down by the DGCA, a verbal abuse onboard can lead to a ban of up to three months by an airline, physical unruliness can result in a ban of up to six months and life-threatening behaviour can invite a ban of two years.
