An inmate of the District Prison was found dead in Haveri on Sunday.
Inmates found the body of Kotyappa Ambiger in his cell in the morning and informed officers.
He was facing trial for a double murder.
Prosecutors charged him with killing Marthandappa Sunagar and Sudha Sunagar in Hattimattur village of Haveri district six years ago.
A case in connection with the death in prison has been registered.
