A consensus is reported to have been reached between the two factions in the Sunni scholars’ forum Samastha Kerala Jem-iyyathul Ulama over the organisation’s ties with the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).
This follows a meeting between top leaders of the Samastha and the IUML here on Saturday. Syed Mohammed Jifri Muthukoya Thangal, Samastha president, and Panakkad Syed Sadikali Shihab Thangal, IUML State president, participated in the talks.
It was decided that the leadership of both the organisations would take a final decision on the alleged rift between the groups within the Samastha.
Mr. Muthukoya Thangal told the media later that till then, nobody should make any public statements about the issue. Mr. Sadikali Thangal said a committee of Samastha and the IUML would discuss the proposals and suggestions put forth at the meeting.
According to sources, 10 leaders from both the factions attended the discussions. The factionalism within the Samastha had led to public protests and the launch of parallel outfits. This also led to some tussle between the IUML and the Samastha as well.
