Twelve schools in Alappuzha district have been recognised for their outstanding contributions to ‘Orupidi Nanma’, an initiative by the district administration that empowers families living in extreme poverty through the active involvement of school students.
Government Upper Primary School, Parayakad, Government Upper Primary School, Anjilipra and St. Joseph’s Girls High School, Alappuzha won the first three prizes respectively. Nine other schools were awarded consolation prizes. P.P. Chitharanjan, MLA, presented the awards at a function held at Government High School, Mannancherry recently. The winners were given cash prizes of ₹10,000, ₹5,000 and ₹2,500 along with citations sponsored by JCI Alleppey.
The ‘Orupidi Nanma’ voluntary programme encourages school children to contribute food and other essentials, except rice and cash, within their capacities to economically disadvantaged families. After the initiative was launched in 2023, students of some 800 schools, including government, aided, unaided, CBSE and ICSE, chipped into uplifting extremely poor families identified in a government survey in the district.
