A group of 10 fishermen from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry was arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on charges of poaching in the island nation’s waters late on Wednesday (January 8, 2025). The group had ventured into the sea on board a mechanised boat from the Karaikal harbour a couple of days ago.

Sources in the Fisheries department in Karaikal said the fishermen left the harbour on the morning of January 7. Among the 10 fishermen, four were from Karaikal, five from Mayiladuthurai, and one from Nagapattinam.

The apprehended fishermen, along with their boat, were taken to the island nation for inquiry. The names of the arrested fishermen are being ascertained, the sources added.
