The distribution of fine rice through ration shops had begun in Hyderabad from Thursday (May 1, 2025). Though it was launched in Telangana on March 30, it was not distributed in the urban district due the model code of conduct for the elections to the Hyderabad Local Authorities’ Constituency MLC seat.
Hyderabad In-charge Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, along with Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi, held a review meeting on it on Saturday. He said that the government gave top priority to the scheme.
There are around 6.39 lakh ration card holders in the district, to whom 14,500 metric tonnes of fine rice would be distributed through 653 ration (Fair Price) shops. District Collector Anudeep Durishetty said that 30% of it was already distributed.
The Minister added that the district does not have sufficient godowns, and proposals need to be submitted to set up more on government land.
Later, Mr. Prabhakar distributed fine rice at a ration shop at Adarsh Basti, Himayatnagar, and had lunch at the house of one of the beneficiaries.
He said that a survey to issue new ration cards would be conducted soon. It was learnt that around 1.75 lakh applications for new ration cards were received from the district so far.
