The rescue teams working relentlessly in the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel in Nagarkurnool received partial relief as the dysfunctional conveyor belt was restored. It runs almost till the tail end of the tunnel boring machine (TBM) – which is at the end of the 13.9 km long tunnel. While the tunnel is excavated till 13.95 km so far, the conveyor belt runs for distance of about 13.8 km.

After a portion of the tunnel collapsed on February 22, 2025, the teams trying to trace the eight people trapped inside faced a challenge in clearing slush, debris including metal as the conveyor belt was dysfunctional. The slush and debris posed a huge challenge to the rescue work.

In the past few days, iron and steel debris (parts of the TBM being cut into pieces), slush was manually loaded into trolleys attached to the locomotive, to carry them out of the tunnel. This decreased the pace of work. The rescue teams can make further headway if the debris is cleared fast.
