Tiruchi Corporation has invited tenders to construct a new integrated vegetable and fruit market complex in Panjapur on the Tiruchi-Madurai National Highway.
A sum of ₹236 crore has been sanctioned under the Infrastructure and Amenities Funds (I&A Funds), Capital Grant Fund 2025-26, and Corporation Fund 2025-26 for the project, which is to be built on around 22 acres of land in the Green Park area.
About ₹100 crore is being raised by floating municipal bonds. A senior Corporation official said that an agency was entrusted to carry out the credit rating of the bond issue. The process of floating the bonds and raising funds is under way and is expected to be completed in a few months.
The project would be completed within 18 months from the commencement of work.
According to the tender notification, the last date for submission of proposals will be April 29. The project work is expected to commence over the next few months after the contract is awarded to the successful bidder.
The project was proposed in 2023, however, it was delayed owing to challenges in finalising the financial tie-up.
The two-storey market complex will house over 800 shops with a cold storage facility, including shops for wholesale operations on the ground floor. It will have separate segments for wholesale and retail vendors with a spacious floor area.
Wholesale traders of Gandhi Market are likely to be shifted to the new market which would be close to the integrated bus terminus and the truck terminal coming up at Panjapur in the city.
