The Ernakulam Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court imposed a fine of ₹38,000 each on the driver and owner of a tipper lorry on charge of carrying an overload of nine tonnes in the lorry.
The incident pertains to December 2021 when Vinod Kumar N., a Motor Vehicle inspector at the Enforcement RTO Office, inspected the tipper lorry at Kolenchery and discovered that the 25-tonne-capacity lorry was carrying a load of 34 tonnes. The driver and owner refused to pay a fine of ₹23,500 that the Motor Vehicles department imposed on them, following which a case was filed in the court.
The court imposed the fine on the duo after hearing five witnesses. They included officials of the MVD and the Legal Metrology department.
