The Tiruchi International Airport witnessed an impressive growth in flight and passenger movements over the past year. The year-on-year growth of passenger movements surged by 13% and flight movements by 15%, Airport Director G. Gopalakrishnan said here on Sunday.
“Tiruchi airport is not just a place of transit but a symbol of progress, growth, and the aspirations of our nation”, Mr. Gopalakrishnan said while speaking at the Republic Day celebration at the airport. Highlighting some developments in flight services at the airport, he said the Air India Express had introduced a direct flight service to Dammam from Tiruchi on January 2 this year further enhancing connectivity with the West Asia.
AirAsia airline had increased its direct services to Bangkok providing more options for passengers travelling to this popular destination. Air India Express planned to introduce daily services to Hyderabad and Chennai this summer.
He said one of the the primary objectives in 2025 was the runway extension project. This critical development was aimed at enhancing the airport’s capacity and operational efficiency to meet the growing demands of wide body aircraft. About 96% of the required land for the runway extension had been approved with the land acquisition process making significant progress.
A compound wall would be constructed at an estimated cost of ₹18.65 crore to ensure the security of the acquired land and pave the way for runway extension. Once this work was completed , the runway extension would commence in full swing further elevating Tiruchi airport’s status as a key aviation hub, Mr. Gopalakrishnan added.
