Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister K Pawan Kalyan said on Sunday that the State government would take steps to form disaster management teams at the gram panchayat level to ensure quick response to any emergency as advised by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

At the inaugural of the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) campus at Kondapavuluru in Krishna district, Mr. Pawan Kalyan said training would be imparted to the teams to enable them to tackle disasters with the cooperation of the NDRF and National Disaster Management Authority.

Mr. Shah’s advice to have disaster management teams in the villages for ensuring swift response during emergencies was commendable, the Deputy Chief Minister said.

He lauded the NDRF for playing a crucial role in saving lives in Andhra Pradesh during emergencies, which included the styrene gas leak at LG Polymers in Visakhapatnam, ammonia leak at Atchutapuram and the more recent floods that ravaged parts of Vijayawada city.

Acknowledging the relief and rescue operations done by the NDRF during cyclones that frequently hit the State, Mr. Pawan Kalyan said the emphasis laid by Mr. Shah on continuous upgrading of equipment used by the NDRF and its training modules would go a long way in achieving its objectives with greater efficiency.
